In a year's moment, the notch went from really disliked, to tolerable, to dare I say iconic. Nothing at all validates an initially questionable design preference more than your competition copying the crap out of it. Why modify a design that's already come to be immediately recognizable? Consequently Apple didn't.
As S versions, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max mirror the overall design of the iPhone X: They have exactly the same surgical-grade stainless band, exactly the same glass back, the same OLED display, the same satisfyingly click switches, the same wireless charging (it's a little speedier this time, but only hardly therefore), and exactly the same notch with TrueDepth video camera system (Deal with ID is a smidge faster and more responsive, but it still doesn't work in landscape setting).
I do, however, desire to call focus on some iOS 12 characteristics exclusive for the iPhone XS Maximum. With its bigger screen, Apple features added several landscape views for a few apps.
